3 Safety Tips to Keep In Mind While Using Butt Fusion Machine

Butt fusion machines are commonly used for welding the HDPE pipe in various industries. Some of these machines are labor-intensive, while some are run with easy-to-use controls and hydraulics. Though the process of welding HDPE is straight forward, many hazards are associated with this task.

Safety Tips for using the Butt Fusion Machine

Each welding machine is different and holds unique hazards. To run a specific butt-fusion, a fusion operator should have the proper training and knowledge of the process. Moreover, before using the welder, the operator should also carefully read the      Safety sections of the user's manual. Considering the operator's safety and others working nearby, here are a few tips to keep in mind while using the Butt fusion welder.

  1. Use personal safety equipment
Using personal protective equipment is essential for the fusion operators for their protection from heaters and sharp blades. Thus, wearing protective boots, gloves, eyewear, and a hard hat is always a good idea, especially when cutting bands from pipe bundles or coils. One should tie-up hair, wear tight-fit clothes, and remove jewelry to avoid catching control of moving machinery.

  1. Check working condition
Before you start with the fusion process, make sure the fusion unit is well maintained and working in order. The pipe should extend to the machine straight and at a balanced level. One should check the functioning of the heater and clean its surface with a non-synthetic cloth. It is better to block the working area to control unnecessary vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

  1. Alignment of pipes
Once the fusion welder is cleaned and found in perfect working order, the pipes are safely clamped into the machine. The ends of the gas pipe should face towards the machine to avoid gaps and voids.  Pipes are clamped in such a way that their stamped markings are in line, and there is a minimal mismatch in diameter. Proper adjustment of pipes is vital to ensure the fusion process is performed safely.

These safety tips are indispensable for the smooth functioning of the fusion machine. When planning out welding work, consider not only the immediate dangers of the process but also lifting and moving the pipe. Keeping safety in mind, one should choose to work with co-workers and experienced operators.
